Each of us had to wear expanders as part of the treatment, and I even had to have oral surgery to pull my canine teeth down so that they didn't dissolve the roots of our front teeth. Needless to say, finally getting my braces off was AWESOME! We want to share with all of you my first time seeing my new smile! Our hope is that this video will let you see that there is nothing to be nervous about in getting your braces off! Good news, Brooklyn gets hers off in a few weeks, too! The opposite of depression is not happiness, but vitality, and it was vitality that seemed to seep away from me in that moment. In a talk equal parts eloquent and devastating, writer Andrew Solomon takes you to the darkest corners of his mind during the years he battled depression. That led him to an eye-opening journey across the world to interview others with depression -- only to discover that, to his surprise, the more he talked, the more people wanted to tell their own stories. Author, activist, and Project Director of the Food MythBusters, Anna Lappe takes on the billion-dollar business of marketing junk food, soda, and fast food to children and teens. In the past three decades, says Michael Sandel, the US has drifted from a market economy to a market society; it's fair to say that an American's experience of shared civic life depends on how much money they have. (Three key examples: access to education, access to justice, political influence.) In a talk and audience discussion, Sandel asks us to think honestly on this question: In our current democracy, is too much for sale? The unheard story of David and Goliath | Malcolm Gladwell

It's a classic underdog tale: David, a young shepherd armed only with a sling, beats Goliath, the mighty warrior. The story has transcended its biblical origins to become a common shorthand for unlikely victory. But, asks Malcolm Gladwell, is that really what the David and Goliath story is about? When people want to learn conversational Navajo, they always want to learn how to say, How are you doing? There are ways to say this, namely: Hait'áo naniná? Haa lá ánít'é? You can ask these but they're not usually conversation starters. These are used if you know the person is not emotionally doing well or physically sick or something. A better way to begin a conversation is to use the starter, A̜a̜'. This phrase literally means open up, but can also mean like, tell me about it. It can be used alone in the right scenario or used in combination with starter questions: A̜a̜' ha'íí baa naniná? What are you doing? A̜a̜' ha'íí baa nídinídzá? What will you be doing? A̜a̜' ha'íí baa nisíníyá? What were you doing? A̜a̜' háágóó díníya? Where are you going? A̜a̜' háágóó nisíníyá? Where did you go? A̜a̜' háádé̜é̜'? Where are you from? A̜a̜' háádé̜é̜'ísh yínááł? Where you coming from? A̜a̜' ha'íí baa dahane'? What's the news? A̜a̜' ha'íí daha'ní? What's the gossip? A̜a̜' ha'íí hodoo'niid? What was said? A̜a̜' ha'íí? What's up? All of these can be used without the starter a̜a̜' but sounds more polite when used with it. Any questions. ask! :-)

Vidas cambiadas. People are starving. They may not know it because they're being fed mass produced garbage. The packaging is colourful and loud, but it's produced in the same factories that make Pop Tarts and iPads, by people sitting around thinking, 'What can we do to get people to buy more of these?' And they're very good at their jobs. But that's what it is you're getting, because that's what they're making. They're selling you something. And the world is built on this now. Politics and government are built on this, corporations are built on this. Interpersonal relationships are built on this. And we're starving, all of us, and we're killing each other, and we're hating each other, and we're calling each other liars and evil because it's all become marketing and we want to win because we're lonely and empty and scared and we're led to believe winning will change all that. But there is no winning. What can be done? Say who you are, really say it in your life and in your work. Tell someone out there who is lost, someone not yet born, someone who won't be born for 500 years. Your writing will be a record of your time. It can't help but be that. But more importantly, if you're honest about who you are, you'll help that person be less lonely in their world because that person will recognize him or herself in you and that will give them hope. -Charlie Kaufman Instagram: Twitter: YouTube: Music by Amarante and Terry, check out Amarante here: The complexity of a human being cannot be reduced to external characteristics. About this presentation There is nothing more frightening than the moment we expose our ideas to the world. Author and vulnerability researcher Brené Brown shows us how to deal with the critics and our own self-doubt by refusing to armor up and shut ourselves off. Not caring what people think, she says, is its own kind of hustle. Instead we must reserve a seat for the critics and our own self-doubt. Tell them, I see you, I hear you, but I'm going to do this anyway. Watch more videos at 2:14 Design is a function of connection. Nothing is more then vulnerable then creativity. What is art if it is not love? 3:11 Perspiration from fear 6:48 Theodore Roosevelt quote/passage that changed my life: It's not the critic who counts. 7:39 Everything i know about vulnerability: it is not about winning or losing, it's about showing up and being seen 7:53 This is who I want to be I want to create. I want to make thing that didn't exist before touched them. 8:14 One guarantee: you will get you ass kicked 8:39 If you're not in the arena also getting your ass kicked, I'm no interested in your opinion 9:41 This is where we sweat 10:17 Fear, self doubt, comparison, anxiety 11:06 When you armor up, you shut yourself off from everything that you do an love 11:40 Without vulnerability you cannot create 12:41 Know your critics are there, know what they're going to say 12:57 Shame, scarcity and comparison 15:20 When we stop caring what people thing we lose our capacity for connection. When we become defined by what people thing we lose our capacity to be vulnerable. 16:38 If you're going to spend your life in the ring/showing up, you're going to need: 1) Clarity of values 17:18 2) Have person in your life thats going to pick you up 18:14 People who have the most courage and vulnerability are the ones who are very clear about who the critics are and reserve seats for them. 19:32 One of these seats needs to be reserved for you About Brené Brown Dr. Brené Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. Marc is passionate about technology, electronics and computer science. He loves teaching people new skills and generating passion within youngsters. A former project manager, head of CMDNet and research engineer at CRP Henri Tudor, Marc is currently in charge of the computer science department at Lycée Technique Ettelbruck. In his spare time, Marc actively participates in youth-oriented tech projects such as the CDays, an interactive fair familiarising students with new technologies and HacKids, a series of workshops introducing hacking to young geeks. As a teacher, Marc's dream is to bring back natural curiosity and playful behavior into our schools. In Luxembourg's school system, there is little room for improvisation or passion, and little time for cultivating differences, teaching respect and propper team skills. That's where Makerspaces come in. This concept of learning by doing makes it possible for students to see what they were taught, learn how to improve existing solutions and grow a passion about what they do best. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
