The idea of a space force is not absurd if it is equipped to deal with asteroids the could pose a threat to cites, continents, or the entire earth, some sort of orbital defense is necessary, much better chance of an asteroid threat than say something like an alien one. The Tunguska impact was nothing compared to the asteroid that hit, wiped out the dinosaurs, and caused and ice age. It would be nice to be able to defend against something like that from happening again. So it's not an absurd concept in that sense, not to mention they could clean up space debris, which are technically a threat to satellites, then the materials can be re purposed or disposed of properly, gotta agree with Neil on this one.

It's kind of weird how the idea of asteroids defense got no response from the audience, but cleaning space debris got applauses. If you think defending ourselves against asteroids is not ecological , then obviously you don't know what effects a big rock striking earth can have on life. For more information, ask any dinosaure in your neighborhood. Oh that's right, they didn't have a space program.

Jesus, every time this man opens his mouth, I'm just mesmerized. I honestly watched this video about three times in order to fully absorb all of the information this man shared. The thing is, though, that even though he said war in space is not strategically sound, the idiot currently leading the most powerful (is that even a fact anymore? Nukes, still, so maybe) country in the world is neither strategic nor mentally sound, and if he is, it is entirely debatable.

I don't get why everyone is here is hating on Stephen in this instance. Well yeah He does Not Like Trump and thinks that He is crazy. You can clearly see that, even if you do not know him, but he does nothing more than directly asking Neil what He and many others seem to miss here, so we can have a rational discussion about this. And also, If the Air force is already doing all of this. Why create a space force in the first place? I mean some people would get work and need to get payed with the bureaucracy going into this? I guess?

We need international space force, not an American one, otherwise ESA, Russia, chi è, Japan, everyone would want one, and good luck coordinating that

NASA actaully was the space agency that put the military satelittes into orbit. But good lie Neil.
Isaac Cornish 25 days ago
On July 29, 1958, Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act, establishing NASA. When it began operations on October 1, 1958, NASA absorbed the 43-year-old NACA intact; its 8,000 employees, an annual budget of US$100 million, three major research laboratories (Langley Aeronautical Laboratory, Ames Aeronautical Laboratory, and Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory) and two small test facilities.[18] A NASA seal was approved by President Eisenhower in 1959.[19] Elements of the Army Ballistic Missile Agency and the United States Naval Research Laboratory were incorporated into NASA. A significant contributor to NASA's entry into the Space Race with the Soviet Union was the technology from the German rocket program led by Wernher von Braun, who was now working for the Army Ballistic Missile Agency (ABMA), which in turn incorporated the technology of American scientist Robert Goddard's earlier works. Earlier research efforts within the US Air Force[18] and many of ARPA's early space programs were also transferred to NASA.[21] In December 1958, NASA gained control of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a contractor facility operated by the California Institute of Technology.[18] -wiki President Dwight D. Eisenhower established NASA in 1958 with a distinctly civilian, rather than military, orientation encouraging peaceful applications in space science.[8] The National Aeronautics and Space Act was passed on July 29, 1958, disestablishing NASA's predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). The new agency became operational on October 1, 1958.[9][10] Since its establishment, most US space exploration efforts have been led by NASA, including the Apollo Moon landing missions, the Skylab space station, and later the Space Shuttle. NASA is supporting the International Space Station and is overseeing the development of the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, the Space Launch System and Commercial Crew vehicles. The agency is also responsible for the Launch Services Program which provides oversight of launch operations and countdown management for unmanned NASA launches. -Wiki interestingly, when Neil lies he thinks he is telling the truth because he has been ill-informed and is clearly bullshitting. NASA had orders from the military to launch over 20 satelittes every year in the 1980s and had strict time constraints which led to the space shuttle disaster. basic facts from engineering courses. anyway. amount of bs in this video is compelling me to see the future of American poltics.

I watched this video when it was first uploaded 2 weeks ago & by chance found myself here again today. Unlike 2 weeks ago, I didn't read any of the comments, but today I did & I feel that I should leave a comment. The comments being left by the many 'keyboard warriors' are pathetic. Clearly, there are a number of Trump supporters or, at least, sympathisers who went out of their way to write something in the comments section of a video from a show that is clearly critical of the president. You guys need to get a life. The comments are also saying things like 'Stephen is so dumb' or 'all Stephen Colbert wants to do is bash Trump'. Firstly, do you people really think that this interview hasn't been rehearsed? It's quite clear that the team at the Late Show brought Neil deGrasse Tyson on to present his views on the advantages of a Space Force. Secondly, I personally find it very difficult not to view Trump WITHOUT contempt. He is a known racist (see 's-hole country' remarks), misogynist (dismissive of MeToo movement, Access Hollywood incident, countless comments on women) and warmonger, who was responsible for taking children away from their families. How can you support anyone like that? Does Stephen Colbert bash Trump too much? NO! Trump holds the most powerful office in the world and is damaging the US and its people with global repercussions.

Wow. all i can say. Tens of thousands of small fragments that are flying around low earth orbit at 16000mph. Yet they can track them and destroy them before any harm is done. Ya seems logical. Hey Neil how come we never see any satellites in high altitude footage? Or even 24hr timelapses from cameras? I have yet to see one and we have thousands up there

THINK of the geometry of a rotating earth earth, every 24 hours the Earth's surface along zero degrees longitude (the Greenwich meridian), starts & ends at precisely the same point & time every 24hours. During that 24 hours, Earth is also traversing about 1 degree of travel through its orbit around the sun. If the Earth is 'cosmically' facing into space from zero degrees longitude, how come, if the Earth started off facing the sun at the beginning of its yearly orbit (say at 12 noon), why does now have its back to the sun, after completing 180 degrees of orbit & 182 x 24 hour rotations on its axis. It does not fit any geometric model known to math, only science. I was educated to believe that the math keeps science honest , well it doesn't in this case, so start thinking all 'ewes' in high school & university math departments. Think for yourself & the truth might set you free.

I think a Space Force is a very good idea. But it should be an international group, like a combination of the United Nations peacekeeping force and European Space Agency. Since space is legally international waters, this would be the best and most non-confrontational way of doing it, and spreading the cost like that makes it financially feasible too. A Space Force doesn't have to be militaristic, the police force isn't. It could be entirely peaceful. In fact, if we ever manage to colonise the moon or Mars or wherever, we'd need a Space Force to arrest space criminals. If could also serve as an early warning for any extraterrestial threats, from the asteroids to the much less likely alien invasion. Sort of like the group Captain Marvel leads in Marvel Comics. It's actually a really good idea. I'm very glad Donald Trump didn't come up with it, or I'd probably reflexively hate it by association. It was first mooted years ago.

This doesn't just apply to Trump. It applies to EVERY fucking president that ever lived. This is the issue with party politics. It doesn't matter how sane/insane a comment is, the other side will always neglect the underlying issue. They usually object a statement, because it was from the other guys even though it has relevancy in everyday lives. ^ That is why I am beginning to think like Joe Rogan. The idea of a president in today's day and age is fucking ludicrous! One man/woman representing 300 million people is dumb. It made sense when America only had 5k people. We are WAY past that. There should be a team of people (congress) representing our nation. JusSayin
E dollo 28 days ago
Neil’s idea for space force is completely different from Trumps, Trump imagines people actually fighting in space. Neil clearly shot that down by saying space war is useless because it would negatively affect everyone by causing to much space trash orbiting the earth, do you really think Trump cares about space trash? This went way over the heads of all his supporters in the comments.
