Success, failure and the drive to keep creating | Elizabeth Gilbert

Watch with subtitles in 30 languages on ted.com: Elizabeth Gilbert was once an unpublished diner waitress, devastated by rejection letters. And yet, in the wake of the success of 'Eat, Pray, Love,' she found herself identifying strongly with her former self. With beautiful insight, Gilbert reflects on why success can be as disorienting as failure and offers a simple -- though hard -- way to carry on, regardless of outcomes. TED Talks is a daily podcast of talks and performances from TED, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more. doing what you love is already a success on its own. this is about being internally validated no matter what the external circumstance is. contentment and being deeply grounded are personal victories which are non profitable yet they make human experience very enriching. creative souls long to connect through their craft yet sometimes they get lost in the process and this talk is very relevant for these types of people :)

I think some people didn't pay attention to the fact that she had been working as a waitress for six years without publishing a book but she kept trying and she suceeded,no one said it is easy to do what you like but if you really like that thing, you will do it whether it works or not.

I'm in the middle of writing my first book. I'm 19, just graduated high school, and the pressure to make this work is insane. I was on a roll with my first draft for five months. then I hit a brick wall. I lost my motivation, my voice, my message, and I fell into a place where I had perpetually given up and accepted a failure that haven't even arrived. I'm still trying to get back into the flow and find my roots, but this Talk always brightens my spirits.

Everything they do is for your best interest so tell them regardless of what their reactions may be. I'm in the same position but my family didn't take it too well but don't let that discourage you. Seek help in ONLY those you trust it doesn't have to be family.

Love this woman, but she obviously doesn't define ego as Wayne Dyer defines it. I side with Dyer. The ego strips us of our connection to all things and to each other. No matter what anyone achieves in life, they are never better than those who achieve very little. Your ego is not you. It's the superficial, superior, and separate you.

this talk is so inspiring in that whether you are successful or you have failed it's so important to go back 'home.' Everything just works out at the end of the day.
SB169885 3 years ago
I realized that all successful people have something in common, they are creative but who can say what talent is? I also noticed that most of them geniuses are writers or so. And after their books become a hit they think they have accomplished much more than the average human. And then they are hailed as everything good. I think Gilbert is here to save herself from failure because its so obvious that she suffers with this. Omg, if nobody reads my others books then I still be happy.yeah sure.all those successful people.Oprah, that Harry Potter lady, film stars. singers.they are not happy.they come and talk about how to led your life when they themselves are full of doubts and anxiety. In life u should have both, creativity and logic because creativity alone brings u nothing.and btw, her book eat pray love made me really depressed.and also: anybody can write about life and human condition and sell millions of books and become successful.look at those Harry Potter books, Twilight.all have been created with the idea to make people hunger for fame.absolute crap.

her last Ted talk was a few years ago.it had to do with creativity.  It was one of the top 20 Ted talks! now that was an inspirational,  I got so much from that.  This one is less inspiring, seems more like an update on how her subsequent books after eat, love, pray were received.  I read them all and Signature of All Things was great and I'm happy that it  is now on the New York bestseller list (yayyyy).  I am such a fan of hers that I would read anything she put out. I find her Facebook page VERY inspirational, tidbits from her everyday thought processes.

It's a funny thing , the idea of Failure. Not sure how or why we as humans invented the concept of Failure, but probably has something to do with a believe about ourselves and the way inwhich we collectively view the world. Failure is just an idea that got believed in. Just like the idea of good and bad, right or wrong. When these ideas are seen through, it becomes obvious that Failure really has nothing to do with anything. So what is being pointed to here is that nobody has never Failed at anything. We use the word failure because it creates Drama. We love the Failure to Sucsess Story. It's a way inwhich we can feel OK about ourselves, that we are finally good enough and worthy of love. That we have earned our happiness and Joy. That we have finally arrived in the world because we got it right. There's nothing wrong or right about anything.
