Success, failure and the drive to keep creating | Elizabeth Gilbert

Watch with subtitles in 30 languages on ted.com: Elizabeth Gilbert was once an unpublished diner waitress, devastated by rejection letters. And yet, in the wake of the success of 'Eat, Pray, Love,' she found herself identifying strongly with her former self. With beautiful insight, Gilbert reflects on why success can be as disorienting as failure and offers a simple -- though hard -- way to carry on, regardless of outcomes. TED Talks is a daily podcast of talks and performances from TED, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more. So instead of reading - Americans are watching TED talk. Deep deep hole in intelligence.

Very informative many greats rarely talk about their failures prior to them becoming successful.

I love the way she mentioned writing as her beloved vocation. As a catholic, I'm left with nothing but the desire to keep writing. Many would disagree but I believe becoming a writer has always been my vocation. There's no fame, no wealth to keep me from writing. I don't care if I have to spend the next few years not being rich as long as I get to come home. Greet speech, Liz.

A lot of people ask here: how do I know where my home is? Your home is hidden in creation not consumption = you must get your dose of endorphine from creating .Go, try out different hobbies till you find your true passion. For me, it turned out to be physical work, I enjoy all the chores my family's farm brings along.Don't give up on your home because you've got only one life to fulfill it!

Your talk gave me a lot of hope but it also made me question where my home is. I suddenly realize that I have always let parents, teachers, and the society tell me what I was supposed to be good at and what I was supposed to do. I never really put a lot of effort or felt any passion or comfort in anything I've done in my life. But at least I know that once I have found my home, I would defend it and would never get lost out there in success or in failure. Now if only I could find a talk on locating my passion or talent.

doing what you love is already a success on its own. this is about being internally validated no matter what the external circumstance is. contentment and being deeply grounded are personal victories which are non profitable yet they make human experience very enriching. creative souls long to connect through their craft yet sometimes they get lost in the process and this talk is very relevant for these types of people :)

I think some people didn't pay attention to the fact that she had been working as a waitress for six years without publishing a book but she kept trying and she suceeded,no one said it is easy to do what you like but if you really like that thing, you will do it whether it works or not.

I'm in the middle of writing my first book. I'm 19, just graduated high school, and the pressure to make this work is insane. I was on a roll with my first draft for five months. then I hit a brick wall. I lost my motivation, my voice, my message, and I fell into a place where I had perpetually given up and accepted a failure that haven't even arrived. I'm still trying to get back into the flow and find my roots, but this Talk always brightens my spirits.

Everything they do is for your best interest so tell them regardless of what their reactions may be. I'm in the same position but my family didn't take it too well but don't let that discourage you. Seek help in ONLY those you trust it doesn't have to be family.
